ADVANCED COURSES FOR YOUNG AFRICAN PRACTITIONERS SPECIALIZED IN INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION

Africa Arbitration Academy

The Africa Arbitration Academy (AAA) was established due to the rising demand for improved expertise and training of arbitration practitioners in Africa and to expose young practitioners to the current trends and developments in international commercial and investment arbitration. The inaugural Academy Flagship Training Programme was held in London (June 2019) and taught by international arbitration experts (academics and practitioners), heads of arbitration institutions, in-house counsel and judges. The overall objective of the Academy is to provide the much-needed specialized training to arbitration practitioners from Africa and to equip them with the right set of skills to succeed within the international arbitration community.

Beyond the Flagship Training Programme, the Academy has organised several capacity building initiatives and is at the forefront of developing the legal landscape for arbitration in Africa. During the pandemic in 2020, the Academy published the widely celebrated Protocol on Virtual Hearings in Africa. The Academy was voted “Innovation of the Year” at the Africa Arbitration Awards, held in Nairobi, Kenya in August 2019. The Protocol on Virtual Hearings in Africa also won several awards including the “Innovation in Arbitration Award” at the Africa Arbitration Awards and AfAA Awards in 2020. The Protocol was nominated for the GAR Pandemic Response Award in 2020 – recognizing innovative arbitration initiatives established to combat the effect of the pandemic.
